Fall is a great time to celebrate the change of seasons and embrace new beginnings. In that spirit, we are celebrating by launching new cutting-edge solutions across several platforms including TopSwiss™ MBS(Mirco Boring Solid) for small parts turning, while reflecting on our journey of continuous improvement.
Since 1938, Kennametal has been a leader in innovation. And it all began when McKenna Metals that was founded by metallurgist Philip M. McKenna, who after years of research created revolutionary tungsten-titanium carbide alloy cutting tools specifically for working with steel.
As the company evolved, in 1943 McKenna Metals became Kennametal Inc.—a recognized leader in metalworking serving customers across continents and industries including transportation, construction, aerospace and defense, machining and cutting, energy, and general engineering.
“When I joined the company, we were primarily a turning company. We developed and manufactured KC850, a cobalt enrichment grade that changed the industry. It was used everywhere, on every material. It put Kennametal on the forefront,” said Scott Etling, Vice President of Global Product Management.
Having a reputation for building innovative solutions for customers' most challenging applications, Kennametal came out with newer grades called KC9110 and KC9125. Both grades utilizing cobalt enrichment, but a shift was happening in the industry. Companies started to focus on developing advanced coatings, including Kennametal.
Continuous Innovation and Tradition
With a full portfolio across grooving, holemaking, milling and threading at their fingertips, Kennametal’s progression also continues in the turning space. In recent years, Kennametal has come out with four new grades and two new geometries in turning including KCP25C, KCU10B, KCU25B, all under the KENGold™ coating technology.
The KENGold™ multilayer coatings offers enhanced crater wear resistance and edge toughness in CVD grades, along with exceptional edge chipping and flank wear resistance in PVD grades. It is suitable for a variety of materials, including steels, stainless steels, cast iron, high-temperature alloys and non-ferrous materials. Additionally, the gold-colored outer layer allows easy wear identification and provides added convenience for our customers.
“Our new coatings allow our customers to run at higher speeds or higher feed rates. All targeting higher productivity for our customers. If our customers want to keep the speeds and feeds the same, they will experience longer tool life. Either way, Kennametal is delivering savings to our customers.” said Etling.
Introducing TopSwiss™ (MBS)
Building on our legacy of innovation and as part of the small parts line, Kennametal is excited to add TopSwiss™ (MBS) to the TopSwiss™ small parts machining platform for medical, aerospace, automotive and general engineering industries. The platform addresses the challenges customers face to achieve superior chip evacuation and surface finish in low-feed, high-depth-of-cut applications in extremely small spaces.
The newest from TopSwiss includes:
When it comes to the precision and performance necessary to turn small-diameter bores, grooves, and threads, TopSwiss MBS has a versatile offering you can count on for next-level precision internal turning. In addition to the TopSwiss line, Kennametal has taken this technology not just from an ISO standard insert, but to other proprietary platforms like Top Notch™, A4™ and Beyond Evolution™.
