Kennametal manufactures tungsten & heavy metal powders using automated reduction of tungsten oxide. Kennametal’s process starts from tungsten ore (Wolframite/Scheelite), which is chemically processed into Ammonium Paratungstate (APT). APT is then converted into tungsten oxide and subsequently reduced to pure tungsten powder. Kennametal’s powders conform to some of the highest purity and PSD specifications from a wide variety of markets including: aerospace, oil & gas, energy, chemical processing, and transportation.
In addition to our portfolio of tungsten powders, Kennametal brings over 80 years of tungsten and tungsten carbide manufacturing & processing innovation dating back to when our founder, Philip M. McKenna, created the first tungsten-titanium carbide alloy for cutting tools and wear components.
